Library Staff and Duties

Library Staffing Schedule

The library is staffed by a professional librarian (Sarah Kern) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Each class will have a weekly (30 minute) visit, plus there will be open hours at the end of each day for students who need extra library time. K-1 students will check out 1 book per week, grades 2-5 may have the opportunity to check out more (as needed).

Librarian Duties

In addition to the library administration, librarians serve several key roles:

  • Teach library and research skills to students
  • Conduct story time
  • Serve as a professional resource for classroom teachers
  • Collaborate with the Computer Lab instructors in support of student research projects

Librarian instruction includes:

  • How to conduct research
  • Navigating the Dewey Decimal System
  • Responsible internet behavior
  • Finding the “Just Right” book
  • Information literacy (e.g. using online databases)

For the younger students (K-2) the Librarians provide individualized suggestions on which books are “Just Right” depending on an evaluation of that student’s reading level and interest.
